Compare Temperature: Hotter and Cooler

Students compare the temperature characteristic of some common objects. This game is ideal for students, ages 5 and up.

In this game students are given sets of two objects that have drastically different temperatures, and they need to decide which object is hotter/colder. The pictures should clearly indicate the temperature characteristic of the object (E.g reddish color for hot objects and blue/white color for cold objects, showing steam/fire/boiling/ice/water condensing/freezing). For example, a picture of hot coffee should show the steam on top of it to indicate that the coffee is hot.

In class, the teacher can prove the answer by using the actual object and using thermometer to measure which item is hotter/colder. Vocabulary to compare temperature is introduced in this game. They are “hotter than” and ”colder than”.

This game can be used with the following in class activities:

172 Thermometer (Science). Kindergarten 1, Term 1, Week 5, 6, & 7
Show the children a thermometer. Explain how it works.
Place two bowls on a table. Fill each half way, one with cold water and one with warm water.
Place a thermometer in one of the bowls. Let the children read the temperature.
Transfer the thermometer to the other bowl and read the temperature again. Observe how the temperature goes up and down.
